About Slag Sealing

The Village of Wind Point began the slag sealing program in 2011 as a highly economical approach to prolonging the life of asphalt and delaying costly street rebuilding. Nearly all roads in the Village have been slag sealed or are planned for the work in the future, except for roads in poor condition that need to be reconstructed.

Slag seal is a type of chip sealing surface treatment that uses black boiler slag, a by-product of coal power plants. It prolongs the life of the surface by stopped erosion from water and oxidation from the sun. Slag retains its black color through the life of the seal. It has excellent skid resistance properties. It also accelerates the melting of snow and ice due to its dark color.

Loose Aggregate

After the slag sealing is completed, loose aggregate and dust will be present. Crews will return twice within 30 days to vacuum-sweep a majority of the aggregate. However, it is our experience that the loose aggregate is noticeable until the next spring season. The aggregate can be tracked into garages and houses from tires and shoes. To minimize the tracking of gritty slag material into your home, brush your shoes’ soles well or remove them; brush off your pet’s feet. Grit can be easily swept or vacuumed up. Use any citrus-based cleaner to remove any oil tracked in. Bicyclists may wish to use alternative routes for a period after the slag seal is applied, as chip sealing treatments are known to be hard on bike tikes. Some pedestrians and pets may also find the surface to be uncomfortable to walk on.
